Sword Dane by woutart Sword Dane by woutart
This pen drawing was inspired by the books of Bernard Cornwell. A Sword Dane (Danish warrior, aka Viking). Could also be a Saxon, as their dress and weaponry would not differ that much. I did not use any reference as to the correctness of the equipment. I just needed to get this one out of my system.

Pen on double A5 spread, approx. 2,5 hours.

A warrior in a peaceful place, what a nice contrast! I love it

Is there any clean up before posting it on DA? Do you use pencils first to get a rough sketch done, then use pens (ball point?)
The precision and effectiveness of the line just kills me. Love your personal style anyway ^^

Hey Fred, thanks.

No clean up, no pencils. These are 'no mistakes allowed' pen drawings. For these I use black fineliners. Drawing with ballpoints is probably the most relaxing way to draw, especially blue Bic's! ;)

In my world, drawing with a ball point is the most excruciating, stressful time. Why? you said it yourself, "no mistakes" allowed :(
What part of the universe are you living in again?

Jokes apart, please, keep inspiring us all ;)

Way ahead of you. THat was my intention when I set out to learn smithing. The only thing on my mind was "I need a bearded axe"

Awesome. How's the skill progressing? Watched some videos on the subject a week ago. Lot of work, especially the eye.

Yeah the eye is a bitch. I was messing around trying to see if I could make it by wrapping it around, like folding it. But my fire isn't hot enough to forge weld :(. So I gotta find a wedge and punch that shit through I think. I had a dream about making a huge bearded axe, so I won't stop practicing until I make it reality

Like a Daneaxe? Punching it through would require some effort I suppose. Would a forge weld be stronger??

You didn't use any references as to the correctness of equipment on this, but the kit is correct to my eyes.

This is beautiful. I find more subtle depictions of vikings so much more interesting. I like the sense of restraint as well as the feeling of attachment to the landscape.

Well done!
As the shield is a concave one, I would place him as a Saxon. But then again, who knows what archaeology will tell us within the next ten years?
I know a bunch of guys who look just right that, so it hits the mark!

You're welcome.
Actually I'm with the Danes, but I'm working on a mainland Saxon kit too, so I'm sometimes caught in the middle :)
No problem with using reference - the baggy trousers are definitely Viking, while the broad belt is a rather free interpretation of an Irish style war belt.
I'm looking forward to seeing more drawings of the kind!
Cheers

Very good, I love these details in belt and armour! Scenery is simple but works well, English coastline and moors... Reminds me of book illustration ( do you know these illustrated Eyewitness history books?). Do not worry about historical accuracy for this looks very realistic - and it seems that as long as you keep horned helmet at bay, it's more than fine ;)

You have a nice source there man, Cornwell is one of the best writer of historical novels. Have you read the whole Uhtred-serie?

:D Horned helmets!! No please.

I just finished book one, 4 more to go :)

Glad thet details come across, they are a bit sketchy, not as accurate as you would portay them.
