Eorlingas crossing a ford. Could be the Isen or some other stream. I'm not sure about that. ;)

I think the Tolkien Bestiary by David Day mentions the Rohirrim riding white and grey horses. That's the image I've always had in mind and try to use. Is it realistic? No. But neither are dragons, so get over it

Photoshop CS5.1 / Wacom / approx. 6 hrs. Started as a landscape speedy.

Enjoy!

Rohorrim/Eorlingas by J.R.R. Tolkien.

love this! How do you get a digital painting to have such a traditional feel? Do you use texture brushes?

Thanks! I use textured brushed in my base colours and detail on top of those with hard edge brushes, but not to emulate traditional paints. It just works out that way somehow. :)

This is brilliant, both as a landscape and evocative of the spirit and mood of the story of Rohan. Thank you so much for sharing it here. It is such a pleasure.

Rohirrim and horses - my favourite combination :D

I like the landscape very much, and the foggy sky. I'm a bit surprised that the last horse would stand still like that, but perhaps it only looks that way? It's difficult to see the legs at that size.

It is not all that un-realistic to have a population of dominantly grey horses, at least in look. They would originally have all colours, but the gene for greying is dominant. The Lippizan horses are the best RL example: while there will be some individuals that do not grey early, those are very, very few.

What most people think of as 'white' horses, are greys: horses with dark skin who originally had other colours as foals, but began greying very young (the same process that give us grey hair with age), until they become very white. They can be distinguished from the rarer true whites by looking at the colour of the skin around the eyes and muzzle: greys will have dark skin, whites pink.

The Rohirrim have black horses too, though, so Day is not quite right (on many occasions, I fear). Éomer tells the Three Hunters that the orcs from Mordor who raids their flocks, always take the black horses (and therefore they have few left). But predominantly greys, are both realistic, and fits Tolkien's descriptions well.

Yes, I'm both a Tolkien-nerd _and_ a horse-nerd...

I loved this picture (despite the tangent).

Thanks! I got gene-explanation before, and am happy it's possible. I like my fantasy based in reality ;)

Glad you lie it. Indeed, the hornblowers horse is a bit static to my eyes as wel.
